Summary[edit]

Description

AD 14-18.

Bronze, iron, tin and gold.

Mainz, Germany.

British Museum.

The ornate decoration on this scabbard celebrates Julio-Claudian military successes in Germany. In the central scene, Germanicus, who was granted public honours in AD 17, hands the enthroned Tiberius a figure of victory. Augustus is depicted in the roundel below, emphasising a link to the founder of the principate. The images stresses harmony and order. In reality, the troops had mutinied at Tiberius' accession, preferring Germanicus as princeps.
