Sydney ferry GREYCLIFFE at Watsons Bay wharf circa 1915

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sydney ferry GREYCLIFFE at Watsons Bay wharf c 1915. David Critchley commentary: "Arriving alongside the wharf at Watson's Bay is one of the regular ferries built for the Circular Quay-Watson's Bay route. It is the ferry SS Greycliffe. Built in 1911, the Greycliffe led a fairly uneventful life on the harbour until 3 November 1927 when at 4.10 in the

afternoon she was struck by the Union Steamship Co. liner SS Tahiti mid-harbour between Garden Island and Bradley's Head. The little ferry was sliced in two and sank, with the loss of 42 on board. It was the greatest tragedy involving ferries on Sydney Harbour.

Remarkably, the steam engines from the ferry were salvaged and sent to New Zealand. In 1938 they were installed in a North Island dairy and eventually were donated to MOTAT in Auckland where they survive to this day."
