Rückseite: ΣV-RΑΚ-ΟΣ-ΙΟΝ [R statt P. Aufschrift gegenläufig]. Weiblicher Kopf mit Olivenkranz, Ohrschmuck und Halskette nach r. Das Haar ist in Wellenlinien stilisiert wiedergegeben. Der Kopf ist eingeschrieben in eine Kreislinie, die von vier im Uhrzeigersinn umlaufenden Delphinen umgeben ist. Kommentar: Boehringer Gruppe III, Reihe XIIe. Ob die sog. 'Massenprägung' mit der Emission von Münzen dieses Typs (mit Löwe im Abschnitt) endet, ist umstritten. Das Dekadrachmon (Zehndrachmenstück) entspricht gewichtsmäßig einem Fünfziglitrenstück (Pentekontalitron). Nach Diodor 2, 26, 3 prägte Syrakus nach dem Sieg über die Karthager 480 v. Chr. bei Himera ein besonderes Geldstück im Werte von 10 attischen Drachmen, welches die Syrakusaner Demareteion nannten. Demarete war die Frau des Tyrannen Gelon von Syrakus, welche sich für die Wohlbehandlung karthagischer Kriegsgefangener einsetzte. Ihr zum Dank stifteten die Karthager einen goldenen Kranz von 100 Talenten. Aus diesem Kranz ließ sie die nach ihr benannten Münzen prägen. Im 19. Jh. identifizierten K. O. Müller und der Duc de Luynes unabhängig voneinander dieses Silberdekadrachmon wegen der Wertgleichheit mit der literarisch benannten Münze. Aufgrund der sich anbietenden Fixdatierung wurde diese Münze nun zur Schlüsselmünze der griechischen Numismatik. Analysen der Fundevidenz von Horten erzwangen jedoch eine Herabdatierung und damit eine Lösung von der Identifizierung mit der literarisch überlieferten Münze, obwohl die traditionelle Benennung beibehalten wird.
