Description

Antigonish, Nova Scotia. St. Francis Xavier University campus seen from St. Ninian Street in downtown Antigonish: at right, Xavier Hall, the oldest building on campus, dating to 1880; at left, the MacNeil Science Hall, which at the time of this photo was vacant and would be enlarged and reopened the next year as the Gerald Schwartz School of Business. Founded in 1853 in Arichat, on Cape Breton Island, St. Francis Xavier moved to Antigonish two years later. Originally a Catholic seminary, St. Francis Xavier was granted university status in 1866 and, by the turn of the century, had expanded its mandate from theology to a full range of professional and liberal arts studies. It's now a public nonsectarian university whose reputation has been renowned in the pages of The Globe and Mail and Maclean's, the latter of which rated it the number one university in Canada five times. Notable alumni include former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Nova Scotia Premier Angus MacDonald, and sportscaster Danny Gallivan.
