Description

St. Anthony, Newfoundland. A view over St. Anthony town and harbour from Fishing Point, with the Iceberg Alley Trail passing over a rocky, windswept meadow in the foreground. With a population of around 2,400, St. Anthony is by far the largest town on the Great Northern Peninsula. Like most towns in the area, the waters that surround it were known to French and Basque cod fishermen from the early 16th Century - the seasonal fishing station and the harbour it was situated on had already been given their present names by the time of explorer Jacques Cartier's arrival in 1534. But the growth of St. Anthony is due almost entirely to the efforts of physician and Christian philanthropist Dr. Wilfrid Grenfell, who dedicated his career to attending to the medical care of the residents of the remote fishing settlements of the Great Northern Peninsula and the Labrador Straits. It was in St. Anthony where Dr. Grenfell, the first physician ever to practice in northern Newfoundland, founded the Grenfell Mission in 1900. Today, the hospital continues in service under the operation of the provincial government, who took over in 1981, and St. Anthony itself remains important as a service centre for residents and (increasingly) tourists to the Great Northern Peninsula.

Saint-Anthony, Terre-Neuve.
