Discontinuities in Tanabe-Sugano diagrams are artifacts of levels crossing

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tanabe-Sugano diagrams for d4, d5, d6, and d7 metal ions have discontinuities. These are artifacts of subtracting the ground state energy when the identity of the ground state changes at a certain Dq/B value. Here, this is demonstrated by showing the d7 diagram (using C/B = 4.5) before and after subtracting the ground state energy.
