Summary[edit]
DescriptionTarpaper Shack, Johns Creek Road, Caney Fork, NC (44221726562).jpg | Though it has made socioeconomic advancements through the past half century, Appalachia, my home region, is still home to a poverty rate, at 19.7%, which higher than the national average of 15.6%, with some areas greatly exceeding the national rate of poverty. Though my home county has risen from an economically distressed area to one that is just “at risk” in that time frame, the poverty rate remains at 23.1%, about one and a half times the national average. These houses, all found on Johns Creek Road in Caney Fork Township, are examples of what is traditionally associated with Appalachian poverty; small, wood-frame shacks with low-cost tarpaper wrapping the exterior and tin roofs. Though many of these houses are no longer in use by families, whom often upgrade to manufactured homes when available, two of the houses pictured still had signs of habitation. Though Appalachia has come a long way in reducing its poverty, there remains several challenges to overcome, with the limitations on opportunity remaining an issue for many residents of the region. Though my hometown does have more economic drivers than most places in the region, with a small regional hospital, a mid-sized state university, a large community college, and a sizable amount of luxury resorts and gated communities, it still does have a poverty rate higher than that of many surrounding counties. The rugged terrain of the river gorges and narrow creek valleys that make up a large portion of the county and give it the natural beauty that attracts so many visitors and new residents does not make access to economic opportunity or transportation easy. I do have faith, however, things will continue to improve, as the people of Appalachia, whom are a very hardy folk, have the spirit, determination, will, and drive to overcome these challenges, as they have for generations. |
