Nederlands: Dit tegeltableau is voorzien van een symmetrische voorstelling bestaande uit panelen en medaillons in diverse vormen met daarin kalligrafische teksten in het Arabisch. De ruimte tussen de teksten is opgevuld met florale patronen. Het ontwerp van het tableau en de gebruikte teksten zijn vrijwel exact gelijk aan die het gordijn dat de deur van de Ka'aba, het heiligdom in Mekka, bedekt (zie Piotrovski 1999: 86, Porter 2012: 261 en Vernoit 1997: 27-8). Dit gordijn wordt, ieder jaar opnieuw, gemaakt van zwart satijn met borduursel in diverse kleuren (groen, rood, later alleen goud- en zilverdraad). Er zijn verschillende namen in omloop voor het gordijn, zoals sitara, burqa of burda as-sharifa. Het ontwerp van het gordijn kende verschillende kleine variaties in de loop der tijd. Het ontwerp op dit tegeltableau komt overeen met meer recente versies van het gordijn (zie Piotrovski 1999: 86 voor een vergelijkbaar ontwerp dat na 1985 is gedateerd). In vergelijking met de gordijnen ontbreken op het tegeltableau de onderste panelen; deze tonen doorgaans een zuilen- of bloemenmotief of bevatten een inscriptie die de naam van de opdrachtgever vermeldt (doorgaans de koning of sultan onder wiens beheer de heilige plaatsen vallen). De puntdakvorm onderaan, met witte streep in het midden, biedt de suggestie van de split waardoor de ruimte achter het gordijn betreden kan worden. Opvallend is dat het florale patroon dat de buitenrand van het tableau omlijst afwijkt van dat op de sitara en is uitgevoerd in een stijl die typerend is voor het Ottomaanse keramiek.
De teksten op het tableau zijn religieus van aard: het zijn voornamelijk koranteksten en daarnaast aanroepingen en spreuken zoals de shahada (de geloofsbelijdenis). De grote centrale inscriptie, bijvoorbeeld, bestaat uit de basmala (de formule 'In de naam van God, de Barmhartige, de Erbarmer') en een citaat uit de Koran (48:27): "God heeft voor Zijn gezant het visioen in werkelijkheid waargemaakt. Jullie zullen als God het wil de heilige moskee veilig binnengaan [...]". Het paar medaillons daarboven en onder bevatten het Troonvers (Koran 2:255) met daartussen in de tekst 'mijn vertrouwen is in God'. De twee ronde medaillons bevatten de tekst 'God, moge zijn glorie groot zijn' met daaromheen soera al-ikhlaas (Koran 112). De brede medaillon net boven de puntdakvorm bevat soera 106 uit de Koran. De brede medaillons in de rand van het tableau bevatten al-Fatiha, de openingssoera van de Koran. Het tegeltableau is waarschijnlijk vervaardigd in Damascus (Syrië) of in Kütahya (Turkije). Oorspronkelijk was het onderdeel van het interieur van een gebouw in Damascus, waar het als wandversiering diende. Onduidelijk is waarom het sitara-ontwerp is overgenomen op dit tegeltableau. Mogelijk was het tegeltableau oorspronkelijk bedoeld om aan de qibla-muur van een moskee te hangen. In de Ottomaanse keramiektraditie van Iznik komen tegels en tegeltableaus met een afbeelding van de Grote Moskee in Mekka, met de Ka'a'ba in het midden, veelvuldig voor. Deze tegels waren bedoeld als gelofte of ter herinnering aan de volbrenging van de hadj, de pelgrimstocht naar Mekka, of gaven de qibla aan in woonhuizen of mausolea (Piotrovski 1999: 78, Denny 2004: 199, Porter 2012: 118). Mogelijk diende ook dit tegeltableau een dergelijk doel. |
