Göran Gelotte föddes 1936 i Södertälje. Vid sidan av teoretiska kunskaper i fotokonsten fick han sin praktiska utbildning hos Fritz Pettersson. Under 1950- och 1960-talen gjorde han uppdragsfotografering för museets räkning. Från och med 1969 anställdes han vid museet för att svara för merparten av institutionens dokumentations- och reproduktionsfotografering.
