Teodora's View - Olivas Adobe in Ventura, CA

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: After acquiring Rancho San Miguel, Raymundo and Teodora Olivas built and expanded their Las Californias Mexico home throughout the 1840s until they created a two-story adobe structure that would eventually house their 21 children. It stands today much as it did then, in what is now Ventura, California, USA.

Teodora's ghost has been spotted by ghost hunters and actually felt by her Great-Great-Granddaughter, Georgia Olivas Madrid, on the courtyard balcony in the very spot pictured. It happened during a local fiesta celebration with Georgia looking down the balcony and courtyard below at her children and grandchildren.

Separated by more than a century, the spirit of Georgia's grandmother entwined Georgia and said, "this is what it was like."

In her time, Teodora would have been able to look left across fields and cattle ranges until they ended at the coast and what is now the Santa Monica mountains.

Looking straight out and to the right, she could see beyond the river to the ocean and horizon resplendent with what are now the Channel Islands.

Beaches going up the coast to the North, toward Santa Barbara, could be seen as well as the road leading to town and the arroyo that snaked through the hills beyond the Mission San Buenaventura.
