Tessellation Postage Stamp

Parkettierung mit Quadraten Tessellation with squares of different sizes

Ein Rechteck in gleich grosse Quadrate aufzuteilen, ist leicht. Decomposing a rectangle into squares of different sizes is easy.

Schwieriger ist die Parkettierung mit lauter verschiedenen Quadraten. Tessellating it with squares of all different size is more difficult.

Moron gelang 1925 eine Zerlegung eines 32 x 33-Rechtecks in 9 unterschiedlich grosse Quadrate. Moron, in 1925, succeded in decoposing a 32 x 33 rectangle into 9 squares of different size.

To give the problem a solution requires a total of 9 squares

(Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tuttle, 1940)

Zerlegung eines 176 x 177-Rechtecks in 11 Quadrate. Splitting of a 176 x 177 Rectangle into 11 squares.

Duivjestijn succeeded in decomposing a 112 x 112 square into 21 squares.

Decomposing a square into squares of all different sizes requires a total of at least 21 squares. (Duivjestijn 1962, 1978)

Allowing some of the squares to occur several times simplifies the problem.

"tessellation or tiling of the plane is a collection of plane figures that fills the plane with no overlaps and no gaps"
