Object history Said to have been donated to the city of San Francisco in the 1870s and displayed in the courthouse; after the earthquake of 1906 in a private collection in San Francisco; acquired by the Elvehjem Art Center (now the Chazen Museum of Art) in 1976 as a gift of Dr. Warren E. Gilson.
Inscriptions On the base: "And upon this act --- I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favour of Almighty God."
