Description

"FDNY Squad 18, which is located on West 10th Street between Greenwich Avenue and Waverly Place, is one of the oldest fire companies in New York City. Founded on September 14, 1865, as Engine Company 18, Squad 18 is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year [2015].... Squad 18 undertook the painstaking renovation of the firehouse façade in recognition of [the] anniversary. Many layers of paint have been removed to reveal the original intricate metalwork design, which is now newly repainted and restored to its former elegance." --http://westviewnews.org/2015/11/fdny-squad-18-remembers/.

Unfortunately, the restoration was not without controversy over the loss of the previous door's mural, painted in 1976 to honor the U.S. bicentennial. That door stood for 37 years and became an "iconic and beloved" fixture of this historic street in the West Village.
