Description

'67, '79, '99. I've been through blizzards before. The snow I could have handled. A midwinter power outage? Candles? Boiling pots of water on the stove to keep the house at 55 degrees and my pipes from freezing (the humidity from the boiling cracked the living room walls)? Now THAT was traumatic. From 4:30pm Tuesday to 12:55am Thursday, it was like living in the Stone Age, with at-risk plumbing. My only links to the outside world; a hand-cranked radio I bought after the last outage, my trusty Blackberry Torch, and my home landline, on which I keep an old, corded Western Electric touch-tone phone. Unlike the Blackberry, I could struggle through the corn maze that is ComEd's phone menu without worrying about battery life.

By the way, ComEd's stated policy is that they don't reimburse homeowners' monetary losses from an outage, since this blizzard was an "act of God". This outage was caused by a malfunction in ComEd's outdated infrastructure in this area, which they have already acknowledged is the reason our 16-square block area, with 109 familes, has had 18 outages since 2005, while the lights in the areas around us never go out, not even in this blizzard. After a meeting with two of their technicians late last year (after the 17th outage August 30), ComEd is working on an upgrade; it didn't come soon enough to prevent this debacle.

We had ANOTHER 4.5 hour outage 3 days later. Thanks to a very special ComEd employee for putting both repairs on expedite.
