| Description | The cemetery church was built in the first decades of the 5th century in the Christian graveyard. Beneath it lay graves, one of them decorated with wall paintings. This three-aisled basilica had a semicircular apse, a narthex and an atrium with colonnades on three sides. North and south of the narthex were the prothesis and the diakonikon. The centre aisle had a mosaic floor; the side aisles and the narthex were paved with brick. The sanctuary was paved with opus sectile work, and was separated from the body of the church by marble parapets. Traces of the altar were found in the sanctuary, along with the enkainion, the small chest for holy relics that was buried in the sanctuary as a consecration, which had been broken open. At the entrance to the narthex was a cenotaph honouring “Magna”, and next to it a marble table commemorating a martyr. After an earthquake destroyed the city, the prothesis became a baptistery, and a treasury, a winepress and a granary were erected in the atrium. |
