Summary[edit]

Description
English: Accession Number: 1957.70

Display Artist: Nishimura Shigenaga Display Title: The Chinese General Guan Yu Sitting at a Small Table Creation Date: 1740-1750 Medium: Woodblock Height: 25 7/16 in. Width: 6 1/8 in. Display Dimensions: 25 7/16 in. x 6 1/8 in. (64.61 cm x 15.56 cm) Credit Line: Bequest of Mrs. Cora Timken Burnett Label Copy: "Japanese audiences admired Guan Yu, a hero of Chinas ancient past, for his loyalty and superhuman strength. He is said to have been so tough that he was able to continue playing the game of go while having a poisoned arrow removed from his back. As an example of the Japanese penchant for clever or amusing substitutions, the artist Shigenaga has placed a book on the low table in place of the game. Another artist took the parody one step further by substituting a fashionably dressed woman for Guan Yu himself. In both prints his grim-looking attendant holds his Green Dragon Crescent Blade."
