Title
The Church of St Mary Steps, Exeter
Description
Oil on canvas townscape ‘The Church of St Mary Steps, Exeter’, c.1886. In an extract from a letter by G. B. Saunders dated March 1928, it states: “To the best part of my recollection the picture in question was painted by my Father about 1870, after he had completed the painting of the figures on the screen in St Mary Steps church. My two brothers and I were in the choir ... My Father, George Beare Saunders was a pupil of Mogford Esq”. The painting depicts the church of St Mary Steps with old residential town buildings surrounding it. The church is one of the oldest in Exeter, dating back to the medieval period.
