Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Clocktower of Andronicus Cyrrhestes (better known as the Tower of the Winds) is located in the Roman Agora of Athens and dates to the 1st century B.C. It was allegedly built by the Macedonian astronomer Andronicus from the city of Cyrrhus after whom it was named. The clocktower functioned as a water clock, a sundial, and a weather bane. On its frieze are depicted the figures of eight wind gods. In this picture are depicted (from left to right) the gods Kaikias (NE wind), Boreas (N wind), and Skiron (NW wind). In the foreground of the image are depicted the remains of the Roman latrines which date to the 1st century A.D. In the background, is the North Slope of the Acropolis of Athens. In the fortification wall of the citadel have been incorporated the drums of the Pre-Parthenon (date?). Over the fortification wall stands the Erechtheion, a 5th century B.C. temple where several deities were worshipped, the most important among them were Athena (Minerva) and Poseidon (Neptune).
