Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Great Barrier Reef is an ecosystem of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-eastern coast of Australia, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc. According to a new study published on the Proceedings of the Royal Society Journal, the Great Barrier Reef has lost more than half of its corals since 1995 due to warmer seas because of climate change. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 25 August 2020, shows a portion of the Whitsunday Group, on of the most affected areas in the central part of the Great Barrier Reef. The resolution of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites (10 m in multiple bands) allows Copernicus services to monitor biological activity and water quality around the world.
