The Great Hamam of Prishtina

| Description |
English: The Great Hammam is thought to date back to the 15th century. It was once part of the Sultan Murat Fatih Mosque complex and according to legend, the builders of the Mosque were ordered by Sultan Mehmet II to bathe daily in the hammam. The structure which is still found today belongs to the typology of double hammams, where both genders use it at the same time. The hammam consists of 16 domes (some sources 18 domes) covered with lead and with small openings to allow light to penetrate. The monograph of Prishtina mentions the role that the spaces of the hammam have played in the social and entertaining aspect of the citizens of Prishtina, especially the women at a time when her outgoing and entertainment in public space was not practical. In the memory of this generation the hammam was a space of meetings and entertainment, where the bride was prepared on the wedding day, where mothers chose brides for their sons and where parties were held, until the 60s when it was abandoned and used as a warehouse.
A fire that broke out in 1994 resulted in the illegal opening of three shops that blocked the old entrance.In 2006 restoration of the large hammam took place, an intervention that lasted until 2013 when the works were stopped due to unprofessional interventions. Today the hammam has completely lost its originality on the east and south face, losing the main distinguishing features for this typology. The buildings erected on the perimeter of the monument, especially those in the northern and western part of the building, have suffocated the building by not allowing the luminescence of this monument. Dikur ishte pjesë e kompleksit të Xhamisë së Sulltan Murat Fatih dhe sipas legjendës, ndërtuesit e Xhamisë u urdhëruan nga Sulltan Mehmet II për të bërë banjë çdo ditë në hamam. Struktura e cila gjindet edhe sot i takon tipologjisë së hamameve dyfishe, ku të dy gjinitë e shfrytëzonin në të njëjtën kohë. Hamami është i përbërë nga 16 kupola (disa burime 18 kupolla) të mbuluara me plumb dhe me hapje të vogla për të lejuar depertimin e drites. Në monografinë e Prishtinës përmendet roli që hapësirat e hamamit kanë pasur në aspektin shoqëror dhe argëtues të qytetarëve të Prishtinës, e sidomos femrës në një kohë kur dalja e saj nuk ishte praktike. Në memorjen e kësaj gjenerate hamami ishte hapësirë e takimeve dhe argëtimi, ku përgatitje nusja ne diten e dasmes, ku nënat zgjidhnin nuset e ku bëheshin ahengje, deri në vitet 60 kur u braktis dhe u shfrytëzua si depo.
Një zjarr që ndodhi në 1994, rezultoi në një hapje të paligjshme të tre dyqaneve që bllokuan hyrjen e vjetër.Në vitin 2006 u vendos të bëhej restaurimi i hamamit të madh, intervenim ky që zgjati deri në vitin 2013 kur u ndalën punimet për shkak të intervenimeve jo profesionale. Sot hamami ka humbë plotësisht origjinalitetin e tij në faqen lindore dhe jugore duke humbë krakteristikat kryesore të dallueshme për këtë tipologji të ndërtimit. Ndërtesat e ngritura në perimeter të monumentit, sidomos ato në pjesën veriore dhe perëndimore të ndërtesës, e kanë ngulfatur hamamin duke mos e lejuar rrezatimin e këtij monumenti. |
