Title
The Jerusalem Infirmary, Alias, a Journey to the Valley of Jehosaphat
Description
English: Anti-semitic satire on the Jewish hospital for the sick poor showing the extraordinary meeting of 6 May 1749 at which the apothecary, Mordechai de la Penha, was suspended on a charge of indecency towards an English girl sent to fetch medicine for a patient. Members are depicted at a table; three are playing dice; all are numbered and labelled in cryptic captions underneath the drawing; speech ballons give their opinions in Spanish, rather than in the vernacular Portuguese, as to whether non-Sephardim may be admitted to the hospital.

Notes The description and identification of some of those depicted is based on the discussion of the print and its context in R. Barnett, "Dr Jacob de Castro Sarmentó and Sephardim in Medical Practice in 18th-century London", The Jewish Historical Society of England - Transactions, Vol. 27, pp.104 ff. The 'hospital or infirmary for the sick poor' was founded in 1747. Barnett mentions others who may be portrayed in the print, but have not yet been specifically identified: Moses Haim Gomes Serra (d.1782); Jacob de Phineas Gomes Serra (d.1758); Judah Mendil or Mendez, Dispenser of the Jewish hospital; Joseph Salvador, alias Joseph Jessurum Rodrigues (d.1776), a doctor.

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
