Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Nichols House, Sylva, NC (45818593205).jpg | This is the Nichols House, a local landmark on Landis Street in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina. Constructed circa 1908 on what was then Walnut Street, this house was built by the Nichols family in the Queen Anne victorian style, with Classical Revival and Colonial Revival details that can be seen in the Palladian attic vent on the front gable and the ionic column capitals on the porch. The house was home to the Nichols family for many years, and was surrounded by many houses of similar age, which were demolished over the years for the massive expansion in footprint of the town’s First United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church along Landis Street and Jackson Street. The old Sylva First Baptist Church was once located two doors down from this house on the other side of the town’s old post office, and was built in 1908, around the same time the house was built. The twin-towered structure was used until the current Baptist Church sanctuary was built in 1965 on the site of the quite similar Gertrude Dills McKee House, formerly the home of North Carolina’s first female senator. The old church was demolished to make way for a parking lot in 1972. Today, the Nichols House, after serving as the C.J. Harris Regional Hospital Thrift Store for many years whilst it was painted white, has been painted in a more period-appropriate color scheme to accentuate its features, and is home to The Nichols House Antiques and Collectables. |
