Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Olumo rock is a great historical edifice, that served as a shelter and shield to the Egba people during the Yoruba intertribal wars. The Egba people hid under the rock for many years, and that birthed the name of the capital city of the State "Abeokuta" (meaning under the rock). In 1830, the main body of the Egba people settled at the site of the Olumo and the refuge provided by the rock marked the end of their wanderings and struggles for habitat and existence.
The highest point on the Olumo rock is around 136 meters above sea level. The greatest mystery surrounding the rock is the existence of a tree that is over 200 years old which still grows there. The tree does not wither nor shed its leaves all through the year.
The Egba chiefs and Alake of Egbaland (The paramount ruler of Egba) performs yearly rituals on the rock.
