I have just read in the West Leeds Dispatch that the Owl Pub in Rodley is closing again it has had numerous owners in recent years. It seems to be a bit of a tradition with the Pub even in 1876 it was noted that the Pub had a succession of owners and it was not until 1924 when John Smiths took it over that things seemed to settle down owner wise. The present-day Owl Pub was built in the early 1800's the original one was built further along the canal towards Calverley possibly where the present Owl swing bridge is now. It may have pre-dated the canal but by the 1800's the owners where looking for somewhere bigger and better to cash in on all the new trade the canal had brought with it. So, when the Doctor in Rodley died his house was snapped up and converted into the Owl Pub and it has been so since at least the 1840's. Hopefully it will remain so and not turn into a Tesco. |
