Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in December 2021, the apartment building at 425 Porter Avenue (corner Plymouth Avenue) on the Lower West Side of Buffalo, New York was dubbed simply "The Porter" upon its opening. Plans for the building were drawn up in 1899 by architect W. H. Archer, which called for a building "in the French Renaissance style", and while it does indeed sport the mansard roof and pedimented dormers that are de rigueur for the aesthetic, the remainder of the building is better described as a freewheeling mélange of the various Classically-influenced period-revival styles that were popular in the era. On a façade of pressed Roman brick, multi-story projecting bay windows contrast with deeply recessed balconies set above the twin entrances. The completion of the building, which was projected to occur by October 1899, was delayed briefly due to a strike by the bricklayers' union occasioned by the hiring of a non-union carpenter; The Porter finally opened to tenants in early 1900.
