Description

Porthcressa at Dusk

The windlessness is uncanny After so many gales. The sea Is flawless, and sunset makes it A pink mirror, unblemished.

On the strand, soft waves break And turn to foam. The roll of them Is a metamorphosis from pink To depths of green, then spiderwebs Of white. High tide, the Brow rocks Under water. Only the Raven Rises from the mirror. A gull Sits there, feathers tinted rose.

In the middle of the mirror, a shag Surfaces, triumphant, gagging On a fish. A myriad of ripples, Pink and green.

Source material: A walk back from the Co-Op along Porthcressa beach on 9th February 2004 revealed this scene. The Brow is a large granite outcrop which is exposed at a low spring tide, and the Raven is a crag which is never submerged. (Poem: Giles Watson, 2004.)
