English: "A Shrine of the god Pan (title)

In this area of Ilissos river and the fountain Kallirrhoe, there is a rocky outcrop with a small natural cave and two perpendicular faces hewn in antiquity. In 1911 an indistinct relief of the god Pan was detected on the southern hewn face of the rock, difficult to make out today. This deity of the wild nature was regularly worshipped in caves and rocky terrains. He is depicted striding to the right with the pipes of Pan in his right hand and a stick for hunting hares in his left. The cuttings in the rock may have supported a roof. The banks of the river Ilissos were dotted with shrines; this one, however, does not seem to be mentioned by ancient writers. Nevertheless, one idea is that this is the Shrine of the Nymphs and the River God Acheloos, with a spring of cold water, a plane tree and willow, where, as Plato writes sat Socrates and Phaedrus, during their philosophical walk. In an excavation in 1893 a perhaps later burial was found in the cave. A few decades ago the Archaeological Service saved at the last minute the rock from being blown up with dynamite during road works." Textː Information board opposite the cave.
