Description |
English: The St. Vincent in Portsmouth Harbour 1883' after an original of c.1862. Photograph of HMS St Vincent as seen from the port side, lying at anchor within Portsmouth docks. In the background is the harbour. HMS Vincent was laid down at Plymouth Dockyard in 1810 and launched on the 11th March 1815. The ship was used to transport French troops to the Baltic during the Crimean War, subsequently becoming a training ship from 1862, probably when this photograph was taken, to 1905. This photograph is a carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time. |
