The Royal Toone Theatre is hidden away in a house that dates back to 1696, located at the end of a little cul-de-sac called Schuddeveld, a stone's throw from the Grand Place. This place actually serves a triple purpose: it houses a theatre, a tavern and what's often forgotten, a museum. For several generations now, the Toone "dynasty" has been bringing life to puppets typical of Brussels' popular lore. At the same time, it provides Brussels' oral culture with a providential location to preserve its memory. In the entertainment world, many events take place on stage as well as after the show, between friends, in a pleasant environment. So it's no coincidence that the museum and its major collection of Toone heroes of the past and mascot characters of fellow puppeteers from all over the world, were set up in a small café, under the attic-cum-theatre. Shows in Brussels dialect but also in many other languages.
