| Description | The climb up the Phangrei hill starts off fairly easy- you can see the path in the foreground, which is pretty wide and not all that steep initially. I have done a fair bit of hiking up mountains around my hometown Pune (Poona) in western India in my younger days, but now, forty years later, I am a bit past my prime. At any rate, a slight diabetic condition and added body weigh means that I struggle with steep inclines and staircases. Considering all that, I was feeling quite proud of myself when I could walk ten or fifteen minutes at a stretch without needing a break. Little did I realize how bad it was going to get as we climbed higher and higher! A popular picnic spot for the locals and also frequented by tourists, Phangrei is one of the picturesque tourist spots in Ukhrul. Phangrei hill joints the Shirui Hills, which is home to the famous Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) flower, which is unique to this region and is de facto the 'national flower' (so to speak) of Manipur.
