(19.84 cm x 17.78 cm) Credit Line: Gift of Alice Klauber Label Copy: "Children play with special round berries, like marbles, in this page from a surimono series commissioned for the beginning of the Year of the Snake by the Yomo Group of poets. The Yomo Group was the largest organization of poets in Edo and one of the most avid sponsors of surimono sets in the early nineteenth century. They selected the theme of shells for the Year of the Snake, because a white snake is the companion of the goddess Benten, who is worshipped at a shrine on the island of Enoshima, famous for its lovely seashells. A different kind of shell is cleverly referenced in each page of the set. In this image, the artist features the grooved shell called mizogai by depicting children playing a game in which the little balls are rolled in the grooves of a wooden threshold."
