Description |
English: The interior of the so-called Divan-i Khas in the palace at Fathpur Sikri
Interior view of the Divan-i-Khas in Fatepur Sikri from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Tughlikabad to Secundra Vol. VIII' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r.1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15. Idealised view of the interior of the so-called Divan-i Khas in the palace at Fathpur Sikri with its central column, and on the right details of the brackets of the latter. In 1569, Mughal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) moved his capital from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri and commenced the construction of the palace and fort. The Divan-i Khas, or the Private Audience Hall, is located on the north end of the palace complex. This two-storied complex topped with four chhatris or pavilions contains a single chamber with the elaborate pillar illustrated here. The emperor would have been seated on the circular platform, on the top of the pillar which is connected by walkways to the corners of the building. Inscribed below: 'Hall at Futtipoor Seehnee'; and 'Details of Architeetmal Ornaments of the Same.' Note: For another version of this subject also probably by Sita Ram, see Add.Or.949. |
