Description

Taken on St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.

THE SEAGULL Yr Wylan

Seagull, floating with the flow, Coloured like the moon, or snow, Gleaming where the dark tides run, Upon the wave a shard of sun, A glint of light, proud and pure Pursuing fish through seas azure, A gleam at anchor, chained but free, Kedged to lilies of the sea:

My girl, most ripe for praise, espy. Around her rocks and ramparts fly To catch a glimpse of Eigr’s form . Let your eye her fortress storm. Tell her it is she I need – Let her choose me, slake my greed – And if she is alone, then greet Her, dripping at her lissom feet. Be skilful: my advantage gain. I win her, or I die in pain.

I love her. I’m compelled by lust. No man who lived and turned to dust Loved more, charmed by Myrddin’s spell. Taliesin could not tell Of fairer form: her copper tresses, The body Aphrodite blesses . Seagull, seagull! Fly and seek The sunset gleaming in her cheek. Let loving words be on her breath Or else I meet untimely death.

- Dafydd ap Gwilym, paraphrased by Giles Watson.
