Title |
The political cudgellers, or the mace of the House of Commons rendered of no service. |

Description |
English: Pitt (left) and Fox (right) are engaged in a cudgelling match. Fox holds out the mace (which has more resemblance to a sceptre), but it is broken by a blow from the staff held by Pitt (which resembles that held by the king in BMSat 6504). On Fox's arm is a shield inscribed 'Resolutions', on that of Pitt is one inscribed 'Addresses'. The background is the lower part of a building showing three sash-windows drawn like an architect's elevation. 5 April 1784

Notes |
(Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VI, 1938) The allusion is to the resolutions against Pitt's ministry moved by Fox in the House of Commons (see BMSat 6380, &c.) and to the great number of loyal addresses which were made to the king thanking him for the dismissal of Fox and appointment of Pitt, satirically designated 'popular frenzy', see BMSat 6438, &c. Cf. an election advertisement by Hood and Wray: 'Mr Fox has upheld the House of Commons against the Freeholders, Electors, and people of Great Britain, in the case of the Middlesex Election, and in all the late important questions in Parliament.' 'Westminster Election', p. 95. |

Licensing[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
