Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Thomas McFarland House, 409 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. Built in 1892 and a contributing property to the locally-listed and NRHP-eligible Linwood Historic District, here we see an architectural hybrid combining elements of the Queen Anne and Shingle styles, both of which were near the zenith of their popularity at the time, and both of which were among the favored aesthetics of the house's architect, Charles Day Swan. The latter is exemplified by the heavy massing, the massive side gable, the Potsdam sandstone that serves as siding on the bottom story, and - of course - the sawtooth shingles that coat the building above, while the Classical detailing on the porch (namely, the pairs and trios of Doric columns and the pediment above the front steps) are manifestations of the former. The most prominent feature, the corner turret, is an attribute common to both styles. A native of Meadville, Pennsylvania, Thomas Scott McFarland (1843-1901) was a prominent figure in the local financial community, serving as executive secretary of the Fidelity Trust Company and an officer at the Manufacturers & Traders Trust Company. He lived in the house from its completion until his death.
