Title
Thomson's gazelle standing near water
Description
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Gazella; Genus species: Gazella thompsonii. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 80-107 cm; Height: 55-65 cm; Weight: 15-20 kg; Identification: Thomson's gazelle has bright fawn upperparts, dark bands on the sides and on the face, and a paler underside. The horns are much larger on the male than on the female; Habitat: Open plains with short grass; Diet: Herbivore: short grass, foliage; Reproduction: Births can take place during any time of the year. The female carries her single calf for six months before it is born; Social Structure: Tommies form three types of very loose groups: one ram with 5-65 females, 5-500 young males, or pregnant/calved females; Behavior: Morning and evening are the times for feeding; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Thomson's gazelle is a relatively silent animal in contrast to the Grant's gazelle. It does not appear to have an alarm call, but rather the alarm seems to be a ruffling or flickering of the flanks. Males utter a succession of barely audible grunts during courtship.
