Description

Funeral of a Tibetan Lama, from "Le Magasin Pittoresque", 1862

The original is a painting or drawing by Peter Simon Pallas, the 18th Century German explorer of Siberia and Central Asia, and author of a "Description of Tibet".

"Cependant l'incinération est considérée comme le mode le plus honorable [d'enterrement] et elle est ordinairement en usage pour les cadavres des princes et des prêtres supérieurs. Ceux des grands sont exposés pour servir de nourriture aux oiseaux et aux animaux sauvages."
