この下絵は数種類知られる国芳の二十四孝を題材とした錦絵に関するものである。二十四孝は古代の中国の物語で、模範になるような親孝行をした子供の話である。完成図の文章によると、董永は家が貧しいので亡父を弔う費用を工面するために自らの身を売った。主家へ赴く途中、董永は美女に出会う。美女は董永と同行し、さらに1ヶ月の間に200反もの絹を織り上げる。絹を董永に贈り、美女は空へ飛び立つ。美女は董永の親孝行な気持ちに感心した天女であったという。

完成図（参考出品）と比較すると、ごく初期の段階の下絵であることがわかる。下絵では董永一人が天女に別れを告げているが、完成図では水辺の道から数人が身ぶりも大きく別れを告げている。天女のポーズも完成図ではよりダイナミックなものに描き変えている。他の二十四孝のシリーズと同様に、国芳は中国や西洋の要素を自在に取りこんでいるが、特に西洋の素描の手法と遠近法の技術が目立つ。

関係ない馬上の人物が上下逆の姿で空の部分に見えるが、これは同じ薄い紙の反対側に描かれたものである。
