La Torre del Río o Puente de Mértola es una construcción singular en el Mediterráneo, por lo que su época de construcción y su finalidad, desconocidas, han causado polémica entre los especialistas. Actualmente, la opinión más divulgada apunta a una antigüedad romana y a una funcionalidad ligada a los trabajos de carga y descarga de navíos, así como a la defensa y protección de la zona portuaria.
