DescriptionTotem Roman Pots.jpg | The aluminium foil covered things with a pipe sticking out is called a Roman Pot (because a group in Rome were the first ones to build such a detector) It is a movable detector that can go very close to the beam and measure protons that have lost energy by emitting a photon or a pomeron in the interaction with the beam coming in the opposite direction and did not break up in the process...The proton that has lost part of its energy then undergoes more deflection by the magnetic field in the beamline downstream of the experiment than the protons that have not lost any energy and can be detected slightly off-axis from the beam line.
