This Victorian style private park was donated in the 19th Century by Henry Shaw for the use of the people of Saint Louis, MO. The park includes faux castle ruins on a sailboat pond, partially bounded by elegant stone balustrades. The central feature of the pond is its fountain, setting on a mounded base of structural “discards“ from the faux castle. Huge cypress trees—with characteristic “knees” showing near the base of the right, foreground cypress— frame the pond’s causeway. Ducks swim in the pond, perch on the balustrade, or— in the case of one nearly indiscernible white goose—rest on the fountain mound. In the background, at image left, is a main entrance of the Piper Palm House.
