Summary

[edit]
Description

Towneley Level Crossing Frame signal box located alongside the Down East Lancs line by Moseley Road level crossing at Burnley. Saturday 12th September 1987

Towneley West signal box was a Saxby and Farmer Type 9 design built in 1878 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It opened fitted with a 26 lever Saxby and Farmer frame which was replaced at some stage by a 24 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame. The signal box was renamed Towneley Station on 3rd December 1951 when the 624 yard distant Towneley Colliery Sidings signal box was closed. The signal box was renamed Towneley Level Crossing Frame and was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 7th October 1973 when signalling passed to Preston power signal box. The frame was replaced by a small switch panel in 1979 which was in turn replaced by Unipart Rail individual function switch console circa. January 2007. The new console carries the name Towneley Level Crossing

Missing from below the 3x2 pane operating floor windows is a row of single pane windows which have been boarded over

The name plate is a British Rail corporate identity printed design

Note - although the name change on 3rd December 1951 was amended in the 1956 sectional appendix supplement and shown in subsequent sectional appendices, the Preston signal box - East Lancashire Re-signalling notice (SN.1330G) shows the box as still being named Towneley West
