Description

These are generally considered to be great cars, amazing handling, Toyota reliability, mid engined. But they were something of a failure in the market, especially compared to previous MR2s. Part of the trouble is that it was called the MR2 and considered the follow on from the earlier models, yet it took a completely different philosophy alienating many fans of the original.

The styling is inoffensive, like a bland Boxster imitation. Engine wise Toyota only gave it a modestly powered 1.8L engine (only 100kw, when a 140kw version of the same engine was in the Celica) and in Australia its driver appeal was further crippled with the 5 speed semi-automatic gearbox being made mandatory. So now you have a lightweight mid engine car, an amazing chassis, a mediocre engine (still that didn't harm the MX5) but with a terrible automatic gearbox.

Toyota really missed the boat with this one, they had a great product, potentially a real MX5 rival. They blew it by making it an MR2. If they had given it new model name and a decent spec it wouldn't have had to deal with the baggage the MR2 nameplate brought. Reviews wouldn't have ended with, it's great, BUT it's not the MR2 we expected.

If you wanted to know when Toyota started losing the plot, it was around the time they came up with this model.
