English: A map showing the territories under Roman control at the start of the Byzantine Empire. Red lines are sea trade routes and blue land routes. Also shown in red are goods exchanged. As the Empire lost its outer territories, some trade routes became unprofitable, whilst new trade routes with the Arabs at Baghdad, Basrah and Cairo and with the Rus at Kiev and Novgorod formed.
