[edit]DescriptionTriptych in St Stephen's Bournemouth 1.JPG |
English: The triptych in St Stephen's Church Bournemouth, carved by Nathaniel Hitch towers above the altar. It has the crucified Jesus in the centre, with the Blessed Virgin and St John standing on either side. On the left is Elijah and his raven and on the right the Prophet Isaiah. On the left wing of the triptych are St Stephen and Moses and on the right we have St John the Baptist and David. Above are the figures of four bishops, St Ambrose, St Augustine, St Clement and St Swithun each of whom has had a church dedidicated in their honour in Bournemouth.
As it was Moses and Elijah who appeared with Jesus at his Transfiguration , Hitch has carved around the cross of Christ representatives of the Old Covenant and the New and Easterns and Westerns, all gathered in united adoration |
