English: A tent boat with four rowers
Nederlands: Negatief. Hoewel de foto in ca. 1910 is genomen, is de boot die erop te zien is, een zogenaamde tentboot, zoals die door plantage-eigenaren tijdens de slavernij gebruikt werd. De boot werd aangedreven door roeiende slaven, terwijl de planter en zijn vrouw en kinderen onder het afdak zaten.
De foto toont de multiculturele samenstelling van Suriname zoals die langzamerhand ontstond: behalve Creolen, zien we een Javaanse vrouw en man, (nakomelingen van) contractarbeiders die naar Suriname werden gehaald om op de plantages te werken.. Tentboot met roeiers op een rivier |
