English: Water resources in La Paz, Bolivia strongly depend on runoff from glaciers and mountain catchments in the nearby mountain range of Cordillera Real, in the Andes. The balance between the water available from the source catchments and the demand of the cities has become precarious in recent years because of an increasing population and the runoff variability caused by climate change. According to scientists of Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) in La Paz, the Tuni glacier, one of the glaciers of the Cordillera Real, is disappearing faster than anticipated in previous studies and, as shown in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on July 2020, its area has shrunk and is now only about one square kilometre. The retreating of the glacier, expected by 2025, will cause further pressure on the limited water availability in the region. Data acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites are used to detect changes in the environment around glaciers in high detail and to monitor their retreat. |
