Richard Henry Dana wrote Two Years Before the Mast (pub. 1840) about his two year voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to the coast of California in 1834 to 1836. The brig the Pilgrim carried household good to trade for cow hides wit the Mexican ranchers of California. He was often left on the beach to bring the hides down and treat them. The Lady Washington is a brig, with two square rigged masts and a gaff rigged sail at the back. So, I imagine this is the view Richard Henry Dana often had as the ship returned to gather his work. Two Years Before the Mast was a best seller in 1849 because it was one the few books describing California in English when the Gold Rush started. Dana Point, a town in Southern California is named for Richard Henry Dana.
