The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Taken on the occasion of the ringing of a quarter peal to commemorate the Centenary Anniversary of the death of Allesley ringer Charles Joseph Reason. Charles Joseph Reason Lance Corporal 5451 Date of Death: 30/07/1916 Age: 23 Royal Warwicks Regiment 10th Bn. Grave Reference, XVI. C. 29. Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval Charles Joseph Reason died of wounds one month after the commencement of the Battle of the Somme. This notorious action, that resulted in so many thousands of deaths ended on 16th November 1916. Charles was the son of Charles and Frances Louisa Reason, of Tysoe, Kineton, Warwickshire. He was a member of the Allesley band of ringers and the Warwickshire Guild of Church Bell Ringers. Charles Reason’s name is recorded on the War Memorials in both All Saints Church and Allesley Village Hall. His name also appears in ‘The Great War Memorial Book of Church Bell-Ringers’ in St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Charles Joseph Reason was baptised on the 10th September 1893 at Tysoe Warwickshire. In the 1911 Census he is aged 17 and described as a coal porter, living in Tysoe with his parents (his father Charles was from Sheldon, Birmingham and was a Vaccination Officer for the Board of Governors). He had at least six siblings. It appears that Charles Joseph subsequently moved to Allesley. When he enlisted in September 1914 his occupation was given as “gardener to the Ven. Archdeacon Bree of Allesley” It may therefore be reasonable to speculate that Charles’ bell ringing was, at the least, encouraged by Allesley’s Ringing Master of the time, George Henry Kettle, alongside whom he worked as a Rectory gardener. It is possible that ‘Harry’ Kettle (who himself was killed in 1917) had in fact taught him to ring. |
