Description
English: The Embassy of the United States of America in Bandar Seri Begawan is pleased to announce that the 2019 Fulbright U.S.-ASEAN Visiting Scholars Program recipient is Dr. Mohd Hilmy Baihaqy bin Haji Yussof.

As part of the program, Dr. Hilmy will spend four months furthering his research on the role of Islamic Education at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hilmy is an Assistant Lecturer at Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB).

Matthews, met with Dr. Hilmy to congratulate him on his award. “We appreciate the support of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and KUPU SB in enabling Dr. Hilmy to conduct research in the United States to increase mutual understanding between Bruneians and Americans. As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Hilmy will raise awareness of KUPU SB through the Fulbright network within ASEAN and around the world as well as develop as a researcher.”

On receiving the award, Dr. Hilmy said “I am really grateful and honored to receive this prestigious 2019 Fulbright U.S.-ASEAN Visiting Scholars award. I am assured that this opportunity will broaden my knowledge and experience in conducting research with international renowned scholars and experts from various universities in the United States, especially at Temple University, a university which has a legacy in the field of Islamic Thought and Philosophy.”

There have been seven Fulbright U.S.–ASEAN Visiting Scholars from Brunei since 2013, who have spent up to four months at a U.S. university researching a topic of importance to Brunei, ASEAN, and the United States.

Applications for the 2020 Fulbright U.S.-ASEAN Visiting Scholar award are now open to university faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, and professional staff of think tanks and NGOs. Click here for more information on applying.
